Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about cycling the Royal Canal Greenway
Yes, the Maynooth to Mullingar section is genuinely flat—it's one of Ireland's most accessible canal routes. You're following a 33-kilometre path that was built for barges, so there are no steep hills to worry about. We typically break the route into two sections with a lunch stop in between.
For our guided rides, we allow 5-6 hours total, including two rest stops and a lunch break. If you're cycling at your own pace without stops, it's typically 3-4 hours, but we never rush. The beauty of a flat route is that you can enjoy the scenery and chat with other riders without gasping for breath.
We can arrange bike rentals through local providers in Maynooth, so you don't need to own one. We recommend hybrid or touring bikes for comfort on longer rides. If you do have your own bike, we offer a pre-ride maintenance check to make sure it's in good shape—visit our bike maintenance guide for details.
Absolutely. Many of our riders are getting back on a bike after a long break, and the flat terrain makes it ideal for rebuilding confidence. We start at an easy pace and you're welcome to rest whenever you need. Our beginner-friendly guides cover everything from bike setup to posture and safety tips.
Water, snacks, and sun protection are essential. We recommend bringing 1-2 litres of water per person, some fruit or energy bars, and sunscreen. Wear comfortable clothes that move with you—check our clothing guide for specific suggestions. A small backpack or panniers work well for carrying your things without affecting balance.
We ask for advance bookings so we can arrange transport, organize group sizes, and prepare route materials. Most rides fill up 2-3 weeks ahead, especially during summer. Get in touch via our contact page to check availability and reserve your spot.
